Role: Brainstorming Session Facilitator/Design Input Product: Foglight for Virtualization - Foglight Agent Manager Dashboard |
Project: Leading structured brainstorming sessions for the design of a new dashboard for product agent managers
Results: Ran a week long sprint with the team manager and developers. Worked with a Sprintmaster and a fellow designer to organize and structure the sessions in line with the popular GV design sprints used at Google. Two designs were retained for further refinement and exploration at the end of the sprint. |
Monday: Unpacking
On Monday the participants all listened to the product manager and developers explain what types of data is available to be displayed in this dashboard design and where they were coming from in the product. Additionally we also went over how they recommend certain types of information be presented based on data types and ease of implementation. Technical barriers were discussed and explained to the team.
Next the requirements of the design that had already been researched and compiled were presented by myself and the other designer. Notes were taken and sent out. The first session lasted around 3.5 hours and everyone had the rest of the day to look over the notes, prepare questions and think about the problem. |
Tuesday: Sketch
Participants were given sticky notes to sketch out ideas for dashboard components and flows.
Each group of sketches were given a name and then participants were given 30 minutes to read over the contributions of the team. Each participant was given a set of stickers to mark out concepts that they found interesting that should warrant further research. |
Wednesday: Decide and Whiteboard
The other designer and I gathered the results of the individual sketching session and compiled a list of ideas and concepts based on the dispersion of red stickers. These were sent out to the participants who came to this session ready to refine certain ideas.
As a group we worked through certain concepts and flows for different components of the proposed dashboard design, and discussed how they would match up with our existing set of requirements and restrictions.

Thursday: Prototype
The other designer and I worked to quickly move some of the whiteboard concepts to a clickable Prototype. To save time many elements are not interactive and clips of screenshots were used.
We only designed the prototype to work for a few established flows we wanted to test based on the product requirements. |
Friday: Test
Based on the established requirements, the other designer and I wrote up a list of questions that we weaved into the prototype.
The two of us then recruited eight volunteers and ran them through a 30 minute session of use cases and recorded all their feedback. Using a large whiteboard, we summarized key highlights from our research notes and then put a red star beside any comment that occurred multiple times. We then presented the results to the whole sprint team.

Follow Up
The sprint was an incredible success. We were able to go from a list of requirements to a few tested designs in the short span of a week.
The following weeks were spent tweaking the designs, conducting additional interviews and ultimately creating higher fidelity prototypes to test with. Ideas from this series of sprints were rolled into designs for Foglight for Virtualization. |
